NOAA-17 update

NOAA have confirmed that the thermal control system was deactivated on the IMP for the AVHRR on the 23 March 2010 (by inhibiting the TCE24 control). This comprises louvers and heaters.

The effect, as expected, was a rise of approximately 4-6° C to the AVHRR components. The main purpose is to warm the lubricant in the Scan Motor bearings. Following the temperature increase, the Scan Motor current magnitude and deviation decreased slightly.
Although this is an improvement the bar code noise effect is still present in the data, so stability has not returned to the motor.
